Whether you are food lover, like watersports or are interested in English heritage and traditional celebrations, Cornwall has something to offer for everyone. With hundreds of exciting events taking place all around the county throughout the year it is hard to pick and choose. Below we have listed our personal highlights in the Cornwall event calendar recommended by our staff.

1st May 2014
Padstow May Day

May Day (or ‘Obby ‘Oss Day as it is known) is the biggest day in Padstow’s calendar. It is not unusual to see 30,000 people crammed into this little town on the day when Padstonians from all over the world return to their roots. Locals spend the night decorating the town’s streets with flags, flowers and greenery complete with a maypole and the following morning two “osses”, one red and one blue emerge from their stables. The “osses”, swirling and dancing proceed through Padstow’s streets taunted by a Teazer, who leads the dance with theatrical movements. Read more

English National Surfing Championships

Following its 40th anniversary last year, the English National Surfing Championships will see the next generation of young surfers battle to knock established competitors off the top spot over several divisions from May 4 to 6 at Watergate Bay, Newquay. Read more

Fal river Festival

This fantastic 10 day festival is a not-for-profit community festival which encompasses over 150 events varying from music & drama, the arts & heritage to gig racing, swimming, walking & lots more. With its diverse mix of events taking place at dozens of locations around the Fal River, the festival offers something for everyone and is the perfect opportunity to engage with life on the river and discover some of its fascinating history. The Pendennis cup

Four days of competitive racing during the Pendennis Cup will be complemented by a shore-side entertainment programme allowing Owners, Captains, Crew, event sponsors and invited guests to enjoy the delights of our home port of Falmouth. Read more

Fowey Mussel Fest

Fowey’s first Mussel Fest offers a weekend of cooking demos, pirates live music, exhibitions, boat trips, Jack “The Sparrow”, hot seafood, oysters and champagne, crepes, wet fish, live mussels, strawberries and cream plus traditional entertainment including swordfighting, jazz, sea shanties, public executions, poetry and lots more. 4th – 19th July 2014
Lafrowda Festival

Lafrowda Festival is an annual event celebrating community arts; a celebration of local heritage, and a showcase for some of the finest artistic, theatrical and musical talent in the area. A wide range of organisations take part in the festival and there is something happening every day, from music and comedy to drama and dance. One of the highlights of the fortnight is Lafrowda Day takes place on the third Saturday in July when the roads are closed and decorations go up. From hip hop to harmony, from folk to funk, there are twelve hours of free entertainment to suit every taste along with street performers, stalls, refreshments, bouncy castles and, of course, three spectacular processions. Polo on the beach

The award-winning Polo on the Beach event takes place once again at Watergate Bay near Newquay for the eighth year, with the promise of speed and excitement featuring some of the country’s top professional polo players. Polo on the Beach is firmly established as a key event in the polo calendar and will be packed full of events, family entertainment and music all on the beach, the highlight being an exhibition polo match between two teams of top international players. 8th – 17th August 2014
Falmouth week

Falmouth Week has grown into one of the largest sailing regatta’s in the south west with yachts racing over seven days. There is also a lively programme of shoreside events. This year there will be seven days of handicap/fleet racing for keelboats,multihulls and traditional craft in the waters of Falmouth Bay, the Carrick Roads and the harbour. The best vantage points for viewing the sailing are: Pendennis and St Mawes Castles, St Anthony Head, Castle Drive and Pendennis Point, Trefusis Point and Flushing. Read more

18th – 24th August 2014
Fowey regatta & Carnival week

For one week each August the usually tranquil town of Fowey attracts thousands of visitors who flock there for the Fowey Royal Regatta, one of Britain’s premier sailing events. It is also a fun-filled week for all the family – sailors and landlubbers alike. Read more.

11th – 14th September 2014
Heritage open day

Heritage Open Days in Cornwall celebrate fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of events and activities which bring to life local history and culture. Read more.

Newquay Fish Festival

The Newquay Fish Festival gives Newquay an opportunity to showcase one of its hidden gems ‘the harbour’. Now in its 12th year the Newquay Fish Festival is one of Cornwall’s most established food and crafts shows. There’s always a special atmosphere at the Newquay Fish Festival, a unique mix of Newquay’s vibrant holiday scene and the traditional fishing community of the old Cornish harbour. Read more.

3rd – 12th October 2014
Thundercat Racing World Championships

Taking place across two venues in Cornwall these light weight inflatable boats will be descending on Watergate Bay, Newquay and Pentewan Sands, St Austell for 10 days of international action. Teams from all over the world will be competing for the World Championship crown. If you like thrills and spills this is an event not to be missed. Family Zones and interactive sports will ensure there’s something for everyone! Read more.

Falmouth Oyster Festival

Falmouth Oyster Festival celebrates the start of the oyster dredging season, the diversity and quality of Cornish Seafood and in particular, one of the last remaining traditional oyster fisheries, dredging by sail and hand punt. Read more
